Boardriders clubs hand out more metal than people remember

Club rounds through the season, a points series, the odd regional. Surf medals travel badly — they live in the van, in the wetsuit bag, in the bottom of a boot with sand in it.

Stainless steel is the right material for this one specifically. AISI 304 is the grade used for marine fittings, so a display hanging in a coastal house near salt air stays as it was, rather than turning the colour of a bad exhaust.

Salt air is the reason the grade is specified rather than glossed over. AISI 304 is standard for marine hardware; painted or powder-coated steel in the same spot lifts and rusts under the coating within a couple of years.

This medal hanger is produced in the widths below. If you are buying it as a gift, size on the collection they already have rather than on what looks right on the wall.

Size & capacity

Size Steel 1 rail 2 rails 3 rails
35 x 8 cm 2.5 mm 8-12 15-22 20-30
45 x 8 cm 2.5 mm 13-20 24-36 34-50

Not sure which size?

Surf medals often come on thick woven ribbon that takes more width than a standard lanyard. Allow for that and go one size up.

Made from one sheet, not assembled from parts

The medal holder is laser-cut from a single piece of AISI 304 stainless steel, 2.5-3 mm thick depending on the width. Nothing welded on, nothing to come loose.

Medals hang on a continuous rail rather than individual hooks, so you're limited by the width of the bar and nothing else.

Mounting

Everything is in the box: stainless standoffs, screws, wall plugs and a paper template. Mark through the template, drill, done — about ten minutes.

Running out of room

Buy a second and line it up directly beneath or beside this one — the proportions are designed so a pair looks intentional. The widest version holds up to 110 medals across three rails.

Getting it to you

This medal holder is made to order in the EU and on its way within 3–5 working days, with fourteen days to send it back if it isn't right.
